Summer 2019 Newsletter

Welcome back to the summer term, although the weather is slightly cooler than the 30 degrees the Explorers experienced over the Easter break on their Kenyan Explorer Belt Expedition.

The team continues to work incredibly hard on developing our facilities at our new HQ site on Priory Road, particular thanks to Dawn Carman-Jones, Executive Secretary and Michael Knights, AGSL for their considerable support.

We continue to grow and develop our Group, which is only possible with the huge efforts of our team of volunteer leaders – to whom I am very grateful. If you would like to join the team I would be delighted to hear from you.

Yours in Scouting
Andrew Aalders-Dunthorne
Group Scout Leader

New Obstacle course installed and being used:

Thanks to the £10,000 grant from the National Lottery the obstacle course is now in use at our new HQ site. This is an exciting development and our young members are getting lots of use from it already.

HQ development:

The winter has slowed progress a little, although several planning meetings have been held and number of opportunities are currently being explored. A great turnout for our Action Day in December got a significant amount of landscaping and clearance work complete. THANK YOU to everyone that came and helped during the day.

As mentioned earlier a new obstacle course was installed in March. We have some other smaller scale projects to complete as we move into the summer including fencing the pond and wildlife area, building the outdoor chapel and
sowing some wild meadow flowers around the fringes of the field.

You are warmly invited to an Action Day at the new HQ field where we will be installing internal fencing, flag poles, shed and generally maintaining the site. Please come along with gardening and tools. Sunday 2nd June, between 10am and 4pm. Refreshments are provided.

THOUSAND POUND BENCH CAMPAIGN:

We are seeking to purchase four, six foot picnic benches for the new scout HQ field, each bench costs £250 and we are seeking sponsorship for the benches.

Benches will have a brass name plate fixed to them identifying the company, organisation or family sponsoring the bench. An excellent way to leave a long term mark with your Scout Group. If you are able to support us in this way, please contact John Coop, the Scout Group’s Executive Treasurer to arrange the donation. Remember to Gift Aid it and increase the effect of your donation by 20% without any additional cost to you. John.coop@hotmail.com

We are working to increase our capacity to take more young people in this section, but need your help.

2. We plan to finally open our second Colony (Warriors) that will operate on Saturday mornings, term time, from September 2019. With Tim Hurtley moving to become the BSL, he will require additional adult support to open this section.
